Paul Hurley captured the red lights in a diagonal formation hovering above his back yard in Whippany.

“A little scary. We didn’t really know what they were. They were very bright red lights,” Hurley said. “I’ve been in the aviation industry for about 20 years, so I knew they weren’t airplanes.”

People outside a Morristown sports arena also saw the lights. Some even called police and local media outlets.

“It didn’t seem to be moving at all. It was very distinct, very distinct. I’ve never seen anything like it,” Jason Ragel said. “New Jersey’s like the melting pot of the world. So, I guess if it’s time for UFOs, if they’re coming, they might as well come here first.”

“It was kind of strange, just that they looked very like, in a formation, that they had a purpose,” Kelly Kaminski said.

Local police said the spectacle might have been a helium balloon with flares attached to it. However, there is not yet an official explanation for the lights.

BAGDAD – SHOE THROWN AT BUSH BY IRAQI JOURNALIST

posted by Andrew Moller

President Bush made a farewell visit Sunday to Baghdad, Iraq, where he met with Iraqi leaders and was targeted by an angry Iraqi man, who jumped up and threw shoes at Bush during a news conference.

President Bush, left, ducks a thrown shoe as Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki tries to protect him Sunday.

1 of 3 Among Muslims, throwing shoes at someone, or sitting so that the bottom of a shoe faces another person, is considered an insult.

The man was dragged out screaming after throwing the shoes. Bush ducked, and the shoes, thrown one at a time, sailed past his head during the news conference with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in his palace in the heavily fortified Green Zone.

As the man continued to scream from another room, Bush said: “That was a size 10 shoe he threw at me, you may want to know.”

Bush had been lauding the conclusion of the security pact with Iraq as journalists looked on.

Bush landed at Baghdad International Airport on Sunday and traveled by helicopter to meet with President Jalal Talabani and his two vice presidents at Talabani’s palace outside the Green Zone.

It marked the first time he has been outside the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad without being on a military base.

President Bush dodges two shoes hurled at him by an Iraqi journalist during news conference; Press Secretary Dana Perino injured in melee

BAGHDAD — His legacy forever linked to an unpopular war, President George W. Bush visited Iraq under intense security Sunday and declared that a long, hard conflict is necessary to protect the United States and give Iraqis hope.

“The war is not over,” he said.

Bush got a size-10 reminder of the fervent opposition to his policies when a man threw two shoes at him — one after another — during a news conference with Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

“This is the end!” shouted the man, later identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadiya television, an Iraqi-owned station based in Cairo, Egypt.

Bush ducked both throws. Neither leader was hit. In Iraqi culture, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of contempt; Iraqis whacked a statue of Saddam Hussein with their shoes after U.S. Marines toppled it to the ground in 2003.

“All I can report,” Bush joked of the incident, “is a size 10.”

White House Press Secretary Dana Perino, however, was hit in the eye with a microphone as security guards scrambled to restrain al-Zeidi.

The U.S. president visited the Iraqi capital just 37 days before he hands the war off to President-elect Barack Obama, who has pledged to end it. The president wanted to highlight a drop in violence in a nation still riven by ethnic strife and to celebrate a recent U.S.-Iraq security agreement, which calls for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq by the end of 2011.
