I would recommend Callaway X20's with a pair of Nike cleeks.
Your going to need Irons 3-9 a pitching wedge, sand wedge, putter, 58 & 60 degree (optional), Driver, and a 3 wood. You should be ready to go with this set.

Callaway makes good drivers and irons, Cleveland makes good wedges and Odyssey makes good putters. As far as what clubs a beginner should have, this article breaks it down really nicely and should be able to help you out.

Don't spend more then $150 on your first clubs. You should be able to find a package that gives you bag and clubs for that price. You can also find a set of used clubs for much less on craigslist.org When you're a new golfer the best clubs in the world won't help you. You might find out you don't even like golf and if you do like golf then look into buying something that works well for your budget and feels good when you try it. Many golf stores will let you try them out first.

Clubs: 3 wood, 5 iron/7 iron/9 iron / putter. Master those clubs and you will be off to a great start.

Brands: not too important as long as you stay with a name brand. As you get better, you may find one brand suits your game more.

Shoes: Footjoy is the standard, but Nike and others make good shoes too.

I carry a 2 handicap and my 2 best buddies just started playing the game this year and Ill tell you what I told them. When starting out BUY CLONE golf clubs, you get the best technology at a great price and buy a speed stick swing trainer. It will help your game tremendously.

As a beginer, don't think about the 'best clubs' as the best clubs for one person may (and probably) are not the best for another. Answering your other question…

Get yourself a decent used set at first. Go with a putter, a sand & pitching wedge, and then just use the higher ODD irons 5, 7 & 9. Forget about the 3, 4, 6, & 8 – you don't need them now. As for woods, I suggest a hybrid (replaces the 3 & 4) a 5 wood and a 3. Ignore your desire for a Driver…

Hit the range as much as you can BEFORE you step on to a course. Practice a smooth, relaxed swing. Don't even think about how far you are hitting it for at least three months of 3X per week on the range.

When at the range, use the higher number irons and wedges more than the lower numbers. Your focus is control, not distance! Emulate the best golfers you see out there. (They are the ones hitting the ball straigt ahead of them)

AND EVERY time you hit the range – put, put, put! – those days you don't hit the range, put some more.

I'm a casual golfer (nothing compared to the people in this section) but in my opinion start out with a driver, odd number irons, sand wedge, and obviously a putter. I started out with Fairway drivers because I like the weight and it feels like a pendulum. It's all personal preference when it comes to brands though, and that's mine.

Well, im not sure about brand, but this is my subject.
If you're going to a driving range you need about a 2 wood, (the higher the number the more the slant) and a 9 iron and an 8 iron (good ones for beginners).
If you are going to a course, all of the gold clubs above and a putter are needed, including tees and balls.
I don't bother with golf shoes, they don't make much of a difference mate.
